it place was taken, one, from appearances large as I counted 6 boilers. another lies on the bar opposite & 2 or 3 in running condition tied up at shore. We have 100 sharp shooters now on the upper deck to pick off any who may fire on the boat. We run on the left side of the Island. I thought as I remembered that I had been on the right side, & in high water boats can do so now. at this time the bar prevents it. We will soon be at New Madrid where Pope went in & drove the rebels out I mile above New Madrid. Just passed another wreck on our left. Just passed New Madrid. I counted 4 cannon which were in plain sight on the river bank & probably more were where I could not see them. We have a garrison here; could see the tents and wooden barracks plainly. The place is small & very poor looking. No firing on us yet. Tuesday morning 28th Oct we landed at a wood yard last night and lay all night 100 miles above Memphis. I woke about 12 o.clock & hearing a good deal of noise went on the bow & saw they were taking on wood again. They had a fire or two built on shore and I saw the Col. standing by one and asked him to pass me through the guard ashore. he did so. He suggested that we send some men on shore to cook up something. So we both went on board and soon had men from every Co. out cooking. I took 4 & cooked 3 hams, 1 kettle of rice
