The bracing Sea air would at any rate have prevented my loosing appetite, through fear of any amount of dirt, seen or unseen. The favourable wind with which we set sail soon failed us, and calms and adverse breezes prevailed almost the entire passage. Our progress therefore being very slow I was driven to my books, to pass away time, for pacing deck and watching Sailors became a tiresome amusement 'Dr. Durbins Travels in Europe' 'Dr. Chalmers Astronomical Discourses' Barnes Notes on 1st Corrinthians and a few other works whiled away profitably many a stray hour. Conversation was restricted pretty much to the Captain, - Not but there were many I might talk with if I had felt disposed to waste time on people I did not fancy. Capt. Mitchell is a man after my own heart. An upright, well informed, well bred gentleman! Quiet and reserved in his manner, he pleased me more the longer I knew him. His Father was a prominent lawyer in the State of Maine, and he should have been an ornament to the
