June 5th I left, this afternoon, the comparatively modern city of Liverpool for the ancient city of Chester. In one short hour after starting, I was there. What a quaint old city this is! Every thing seems odd. I have strolled through the streets and visited the Cathedral, whose history, filled with interest, runs back to the seventh century (A.D) Here I am at the Royal Hotel, - and a very pleasant Hotel it is. Yet how differant from an American one! English Hotels have no 'table d' hote'. Gentleman travelling with ladies, take their meals in Private Parlours; when unaccompanied in the Coffee Room. The Coffee Room is a large apartment with numerous small tables, fitted up with more or less splendor according to the character of the House. When you wish for Breakfast, Dinner or Tea you take your seat at one of these tables, and ringing a bell close to it, call for whatever you desire. There is nothing already prepared (except cold meat) so you have to wait until your meal is cooked, unless you take the precaution to order
