assurance of greater social & economic equality & justice - how to reconcile them? Imp. of the middle class in the progress of society? How to make nationalism serve the cause of internat'l cooperation? Diff. bet. a colony & a mandated area? Correlation bet. self-interest and the moral obligation to respect the dignity of your fellow man, to deal honestly & fairly? Even the broad minded members of the privileged class are prone to worship stability - need to be shaken from their apathy, shamed from their apprehension of change. Has capitalism - as well as Christianity - been given a fair trial? Can the prospect of power, prestige, recognition, take the place of profit incentive? "How can you ever have political & econ. freedom where the state owns everything/" (Wilkie) A man must never cease growing, developing, looking ahead. Be alert, be vigorous, cultivate the mind & memory continually - laugh a lot. 5/7 Friday If the general standard of living is increased thru gov't ownership & control why be alarmed at the bureaucracy & inefficiency, debt increase, etc? -or do they bring disaster in the long run? Are the old virtues of thrift, hard work, initiative no longer imp? A society must earn what it receives or it will disintegrate for lack of character. A
