The time to levy heavy taxes to meet a mounting war debt is during the war itself when the people are in the spirit to accept the sacrifice & when they are nec. anyhow as an anti-inflation measure. The New Deal is doing this country a disservice in this respect. If we expect to avoid disastrous repercussions in our economy, after the war we must be as tough on the home front as we are on the fighting front. It is true that the common people will suffer more from such measures than the wealthy, but it will be a minor sacrifice compared to what they will have to endure if we are snowed under by a run-away inflation. The U.M.W. strike - euphemistically clothed in the phrase "we shall not trespass on comp. property without a contract" - is largely a pers. battle bet. Roosevelt & John L. Lewis. If a wage increase is granted Lewis once more will be top dog in the labor ranks. If the increase is refused, Roosevelt may lose the support of labor in the next election. He is in a tough spot. but mostly of his own making. Had the Administration effectively applied their price controls long ago this situation could never have arisen. As it is the miners really need more money - which the operators can afford to pay because of an OPA permitted boost in coal prices - to meet
