5/14 - Friday Now why all this excitement and criticism of the British Empire. It would be virtually as correct to refer to this country & its possessions, though not so widespread, as the American Empire. Our acquisitions, growth & development into a United States closely parallels that of the British Commonwealth. England fought for and won the territories of what we now know as Canada, Union of S. Africa, India, Australia, Egypt, etc, plus many islands. Many of these have grown to full dominion and independent status; some are still in the process, not having yet met the required standards. Where there has been no racial problem the transition has been steady & sure, eg. Canada & Australia. Our history has been quite similar though confined for the most part to the boundaries of one continent. From our original 13 colonies we advanced ever westward, acquiring the Northwest Terr., Florida, La Pchse, Texas, Calif, Oregon Territory, Alaska, Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, etc. As each terr., or division thereof, measured up to certain stipulations they were admitted as states with full rights & protection under the constitution. Our growth to federalism has been steady and sure though not without its difficulties including a Civil War. As in the British Empire
