5/18 - Tuesday Talked to a Jg (Young) who made the run to Archangel as Naval gunnery officer on an armed mchtman - tough go - naval gun crews got more liberty but less pay than the merchant marine sailors - union prevented the possibility of much military discipline. U.S. shipping can't compete with other countries bec. of higher wages (eg $80 to $40 min. for Eng) - need a gov't subsidy - Liberty ships too slow for peace time competition - Hurricane (1) only air protection they had the whole way. Refueled destroyer this afternoon. "Errol Flynn says its best with your shoes on." Moonbeams were dancing on the water tonight in ever changing forms - a kaleidoscope of geometric pattern - without refocusing my eyes the shapes seem to grow & become permanent as if they were traced on the bottom of a pool of water about 6" deep. 5/19- Wed. "Always fake before you strike" Desire for approval of associates deters the conservative, respectable people from advocating reform.
