Wednesday - Apr. 29. McCroskey was gone on a cross country hop so didn't get my final instruction. Didn't put my extra time to very good use - conked off on the leather davenport most of the morning. Received a long air-mail letter from Ben saying that he and Ellie were very much that way and that he was thinking of proposing, etc, what did I think, and please let him know by Friday. Flattered that he should ask me, and did hastily pen my views on the situation, sending it special delivery air mail. Found a letter from the commandant's quarters in my box late this afternoon. Couldn't imagine what it could be about, opened it with avid curiosity. It turned out to be an invitation from Mrs. Read, wife of the skipper, asking Ken and me to drop in on them Friday at 5:30. You could have knocked me over with a feather, and Pettit just about expired. It seems Dr. & Mrs. O'Brien of the University Hospital in Iowa City had written that
