from Merle, with explanations and sentiments satisfactory. Sure glad to hear from her again - a fine gal. Sunday - May 3 Had no whites so didn't get to church. Bob & I went down to the beach for a couple of hours this morning. Mighty pleasant lying around the sun - wish I could do more of it. Slept most of the afternoon, and read in Carl Sandburg's "The Prairie Years" of Lincoln after supper. Monday - May 4 Successfully passed my final check in primary squadron this afternoon. Felt that I gave my check pilot a pretty darn good ride. Nice to get that one out of the way. Had night flying after supper for a couple of hours. It is a lot of fun to land in the dark along a lighted runway. Have to keep on the ball though. Tuesday - May 5. Kind of dull day. Had a sandbag hop the last period today - that is a solo flight from the front cock pit with a sandbag in the rear to keep
