Tuesday - May 12 Successfully passed our formation check the last period this morning. A part from the first takeoff it was a pretty good ride. Wednesday - May 13 Drove out to squadron with Scottie & Hollows and finished checking out. We are supposed to take another pressure chamber test, have some X rays of the chest taken, and report to squadron three quite soon. We have decided to "conk off" for a few days, however. Butch O'Hare was on the station this afternoon and gave a little talk to the assembled cadets at 5:30 PM. Quite a modest chap, hardly mentioning his exploits. This one statement of his struck me as being particularly American - "once I was up there with no one to help, there wasn't anything else I could do but get after them." What a contrast to what an Axis flying ace would probably have said. He made fighters sound like pretty good duty. Rather think
