Wed. - July 1 Finished checking in. At one of the offices a woman stopped me saying that she stayed with Mr. & Mrs. Eastman who used to farm just outside Adel, & that they wanted very much to see me some time. If they knew how many times I used to steal watermelons from their patch they might not be so anxious. Heard a brief talk from Lt. Comm. Thomas who welcomed us to the station and made the point that at this base the sole purpose of the training was to teach us to fight & that we shouldn't be anticipating instructors jobs nor ferry command, etc. He put it well, free from dramatics, but, nonetheless, forcibly. Sounded like good sense to me. Am all for it. Reported in to squadron late in the afternoon. There will be lectures tomorrow.
