it all immensely. Very glad that I enlisted when I did. Played some touch football around five oclock. It felt good to get some exercise again. Tonight I drove over to town & made a recorded interview for brother Larry Winn's sports broadcast. It was interesting to watch the reaction of the different men as we all sat around listening to President Roosevelt's request that Congress declare war on Japan. Nearly everyone accepted the situation quite matter-of-factly and made little comment. Some, of course, feel that, perhaps, they would have done better not to have enlisted in a service bound to see immediate action. The rest are resigned to their unavoidable duty. One man said he had already become a sort of fatalist about the whole matter. This is a quite common, & normal, feeling in all branches of the service, I believe. In speaking in behalf of our declaration of war isolationist Ham Fish said on the floor of Congress "that at the proper time
