Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1941 Apart from picking up around the grounds we did almost nothing at all during the morning. This base is pretty crowded now which makes it difficult to keep everyone busy with the limited facilities available. It is rumored that three new instructors are coming aboard; if so the flying tempo will be stepped up even more. Rec'd several letters on the 1st delivery which had been forwarded from Omaha. Among them was a short letter from President Hancher of the U. of Iowa. A reprint of an editorial in the Mason City Globe gazette by the Daily Iowan prompted his note of counsel & encouragement. The editorial dealt with my short Armistice Day speech delivered in front of Old Capitol. Earl Hall was most generous in his remarks & made me most happy. I had hoped that that particular talk would get some recognition, & the fact that it did just as I was leaving for the service was extraordinarily nice for me. Also received news through a
