letter from the folks that B. Hobbs may soon be at this base. How wonderful that would be! I have written Gus ["Gus", was Nile's appelation for his father at this time.] urging him to try to get Bob to enter this present class a week or so late if at all possible. Ken & I have now attended two classes of radio & trig. I think the former is apt to prove the more troublesome. How ridiculously shortsighted this sudden war has made the isolationists look. How must Lindbergh, Wheeler, Nye, etc, feel now that enemy war planes have actually flown over San Francisco. Even Hoover was off the beam, I'm afraid. He was so interested in our danger to the east that he forgot Japan almost completely. It seems quite evident that this war, now spread to every corner of the earth, is being engineered in its grand strategy directly from Berlin. The Axis powers are, in truth, attempting to march around the seas. If Germany gets control of the French Navy the situation will be truly serious.
