Saving...
to forestall all this when Japan 1st went into Manchukuo, & Italy into Abyssinia. Sacrificing principle to temporary expediency is always costly in the long run. There is no correct road except straight ahead. Quiet descended on the barracks about 9 PM as we all gathered around to listen to Pres. Roosevelts fireside chat. He was all too right when he said that in fighting Japan we were fighting Germany, and that a defeat for Russia in the Caucasus was a blow against us. I cannot help but apostrophize here and commend Wilkie on his stand since he was defeated for the presidency in the fall of 1940. He spoke & acted as I believe the whole Republican party should have. He showed courage, foresight, & patriotism in the highest sense. Power to him! And lastly, what irreparable harm John L. Lewis did to the prestige of labor by his selfish action in the captive-mine disputes - & this even though the mediation board granted his point.
