work & a year of law, and yet today I was picking up cigarette butts around the ad building like a common snipe hunter. I do not actually rebel at such duty, but now & then a bit of humorous cynicism sneaks into my thought. Bob Hobbs took his final physical in Kansas City today. He came out to the base about five oclock, and we had a fine talk together. He hasn't changed a bit since I last saw him in Denver in the summer of 1940. It wasn't possible for him to get into the class that came aboard today, but he will be on hand when the Jan. 2d class comes in. Friday - Dec. 19 Gene Tunney, head of the physical ed. program for the Navy, came on to the base this morning. Cap't. Tomlinson mustered the entire base personnel in the south hangar at 12:30 to listen to a short talk by Tunney. The reactions of the boys to what he said varied considerably, but most of them, including myself, weren't too impressed. His points were pretty well taken, but he sermonized a little too much.
