special commission in the Navy. We drove out to the plaza for some ice cream, and then back down to the Hotel Dixon where we met K. Pettit. Inconveniently, Bob had a watch to stand at the base and couldn't be with us. We dropped into the Town Royale for about 45 minutes. At midnight when they closed up everyone was singing the good old songs and in general having a very glowing good time. I think it would be well to mention the men who are in command of this base, the U.S.S. Fairfax. The captain is Lt. Comm. Tomlinson - a man who, according to the men around here, has more hours in the air over 30,000 feet than anyone in the world. The executive officer next under him is Lt. Comm. Helm. Lt. Peterson is in charge of flight operations, and Col. Peters of the Marines is officer in charge of ground school. All very likeable men, and quite competent as far as I can tell. Ensign Adams and Ensign [Solfisburg?] are a couple of ninety day wonders
