towns and their shacks. The distances were not short, but apart from a bicycle now and then, or a mule or a horse they were always walking. We stopped in Clarksdale, Miss. for lunch. Our whole surrounding seemed so much less prosperous than in the north - but a pretty passable meal, nonetheless. Next on to Vicksburg where Grants "victory in the west" turned the tide for the North back in the early '60s. The view of the Miss. R. from the high bluffs around this city was majestic to say the least. Such a vista made you realize why this river is called the Father of Waters. Soon we wheeled into Natzhez, that historic old river town of beautiful homes. We didn't have time to look around much, but we saw a few of the homes which gave it its reputation. By constant driving we got into Baton Rouge, Louisiana around seven oclock. The highway took us by the capitol bldg, so we stopped and got out for a little bit. It
