sure is a grand structure, but what held our interest was a bronze statue of Huey Long bathed in the spotlight shining down from the very top of the capitol. What a colorful and contradictory figure he was - bitterly hated and dearly loved, ruthless yet kind - nonetheless, a typical dictator. He did everything on a fear and favor basis. After a dinner of steak and french fries we began the last leg of our trip - 83 miles to New Orleans. The outskirts of this fabulous city reminded me a great deal of Los Angeles - wide, 4 lane highways, many neon signs, tourist cabins and drive-in spots galore, warm climate, and everybody driving like mad. All of us were quite well impressed with what we saw as we drove down Canal street. The newer part of town, at least, looks clean, modern, interesting. We all remarked how much larger it seemed than K.C. (pop. N. Orleans = 499,000, & K.C. about 400,000).
