Ere I affliction knew I went astray, That & thy word shall now direct my way, O thou whose nature does all good include, Whose actions, as they nature must be good, Whose ways are wisest, best and kindest still, What way seems best, teach me to do thy will, The haughty foe who just and right defies, Against my fame; has forg'd malicious lyes, Let him rail on while I still better grow, And thus revenge me on the haughty foe, While in thy law more pleasure I receive, Than all the dull delights of sence can give, O bless'd affliction! welcome they sharp rod, If thence at last I learn to know my God, My God, thy laws I love I prize 'em more, Than all the dropy wealth of Ophirs golden shore. 10. Since I'm the work of thy Almighty hands, Teach me to know, & do thy just commands, When freed from all my grief how will the just, Who knew on thee my labouring heart did trust, How will they help me to rejoyce & sing, The praises of my Savious & my King! This when my God sees best, for still I know, Since he is just, his judgments must be so, In all my suff'rings righteous thou O Lord! Faithfull thy promise, & unchang'd thy word, Thy speedy help, o let they Servant see, For thou hast said it, & I trust in thee, Bowells of Pity have, & comfort gie, Thy favours life, O smile & let me live.
