Braces for a Boy of Ten or Twelve Years Old Knitting from [Qupen?] Materials: Strubb's knitting cotton No 6, three threads; 3 needles No 16. These braces, which are 23 1/2 in. in length & 1 1/2 in. in width. are done in a kind of double knitting, which is very strong, being worked with fine needles & rather coarse cotton. Cast on 12 stitches to commence. & having taken off the 1st stitch, knit twice in each of the others (first as usual & then from the back) so as to make 23 stitches in all for the width of the brace. 1st row. Take off the 1st stitch bring the thread in front of the next & take it off also as if about to purl, purl the following stitch & repeat from *. The thread is kept in front during the whole of this row. 2nd row; Take off the first stitch, * 1 plain, keep the thread behind the next stitch & take it off as if about to purl, & repeat from * at the end, knit the 2 last stitches plain. 3rd row. Like 1st. 4th row. Like 2nd & continue these two rows alternately throughout the brace. It will be observed that in each of these rows the stitches slipped in one row are those to be worked in the next. The button=holes are to be two & a half inches from either end of the straps. To make them, divide the stitches in half, knitting 12 stitches as usual from the outer edge towards the centre & with a 3rd needle knit them backwards & forwards in the same manner as before (but when the row would naturally end with a slipped stitch, in order to make the edge of the button hole firmer; it must be knitted plain or purl, according to the row) till you have the depth of the button hole one inch & a quarter. Count the number of rows knitted for the button hole. Then, with the disengaged needle pick up about 8 stitches along the inside edge of the button hole, & temporarily using another needle, purl & cast off each one of them with the same thread used for knitting the 12 stitches. (this is to make it stronger, & prevent having to break off the thread) The one stitch left on the needle at the end of this casting off will make the 12th for the other side of the button hole, which must be knitted backwards & forwards like the other, only beginning from the inside for an equal number of rows, ending at the outside: then work from the outer edge the whole way across both sides, taking in the stitch that was added
