over the ground & pieces of Artillery wagons & amunition wagons where the Union army retreated through the woods. Cannon balls & Shells lay all around on the ground, I Saw one place where the water had run along & the balls washed down in the ditch & they lay there as thick as you ever see apples in your life. trees cut off by balls all along the woods. We stoped in the woods & made us some coffee & broiled our meat & had a good dinner for a Soldier. in these woods there were Rebs buried & lots of them too I Saw graves of men where the faces lay out or the bone of the face, they were killed the 29th. day of Aug, 1862
