a perfect success and they now have plenty of onions radishes lettice &c. for their whole Regts. There is too many people and not enough rails for to protect one here or we would have one on the way long since. You speak something about leaveing the children with mother and paying me a visit here but you need make no such calculations for there was an order issued about 10 days since forbidding any passes to be granted to women to come to this department. I would be glad enough to see you and have you visit me but dont try it now. It may be that if I cannot get home this summer that arrangements can be made so that you can come this fall. I wrote out a communication 3 or 4 days since and sent it up to Gen Rosecrans asking for a leave of absence for Lt Sering to go home to see his mother but have not heard from it yet but I have not the least idea it will be granted but then we never know until we try. He received a telegraph dispatch yesterday from Sam. stating that she was not expected to live. There appears to be a general commotion in all the different departments of the Army and I think the foundations of the Confeds are being considerably shaken notwithstanding Hookers defeat. Stonemans Cavalry done a good thing under Jo. Hooker and Griersons Cavalry have done a better thing under Grant. And our forces are gradually gaining ground slowly but surely in evry direction. And then I see in todays paper that there is to be 100 000 more cavalry put into the field immediately so that I still think the war will be ended the present year. There is considerable commotion and various movements going on in this Department but what it means I do not know. There is different rumors afloat in regard to what Bragg is doing in our front
