Your letter of the 16th ult, come to hand some 8 or 10 days since and I was glad to hear that you was so well. I was much surprised and Sorry to hear that Indiana was Suffering so bandly for want of rain. I was also much surprised to hear that you was entirely out of water as I supposed that when the cistern was full it would last longer than what it has. I will not be surprised at any time to hear of you being Sick again for if you do such work as dig Potatoes and hoe in the garden for a whole day at a time you may well expect a relapse of your disease. I am glad to hear that John Pyle is likely to get well and hope soon to hear of him being about again. I guess you are mistaken about Col Bennett going to Niagara as I understand that he has gone to rejoin his Regt. Glad to hear that Mark is well and I guess he will see the Elephant all over before he gets out of the Service, particularly if he is going to Mobile. And by the way if he goes there he will get a bit of Sea Voyage with his Soldiering. Guess he thinks he has got out of Missouri now Well night before last, (It is now Friday morning the 4th) I come in from 2 1/2 days picket tour and when I got here I was handed a letter written by one Sarah Davis at Liberty Ind. In which letter the Said Sarah appears to have almost gone into tantrums or Some other foreign State in regard to money matters, hard living, lazy husband, bad neighbors, good credit, hard Scrubbing, new Carpets, wood house and Kitchen, &c, &c, &c, &c, &c. Hold your temper Sally, and Keep cool and it will all come right when this Horrid War is Over. Said Sally prides herself on the judicious manner in which she has used her money for the last two years, Says she beats any Officers wife in the County in that respect, &c. Query. Wonder if there is an Officer in the Army from Union Co. of Any Rank who has Sent more money to his family that A.F. Davis / Lieut Co "I" 15 Ind Vols. The fewer such letters a man receives here the better he feels. I am extremely Sorry to hear of your Brother Enes's Sickness. I fear it will disappoint you in haveing the pleasure of a Visit from your mother. The next letter I hope to hear of his recovery. I hate it badly about our Cow but such things cannot be helped. If I had the money or could get it I would buy Freds property at the price you name. The boys of the Company are all well. I have had the Flux for four days but not so bad but what I Kept up and did not quit duty. Am about well now. I forgot to ask you when you was going to the lower end of town to take tea again. Well Rilla Nan & Hattie, I hope you are all well and lively and getting along all right. Nan, what makes you such a favorite with the neighbors over the way. Well now I have about filled the sheet but how soon it will reach you is hard to tell, it may Start in an hour and maybe not for 3 or 4 days, as Our mails only go Semi Occasionaly now. Wonder why I never receives any letters from Vans, Ferman or Newton. They all appear to have entirely deserted me. Write as often as you can and oblige Your Affectionate Husband A.F. Davis
