861517 Camp McClellan Davenport Iowa Sept the 17 1861 Dear friends JMcDo and jim shields I take the opertunity of writing a few lines to let you know that I am still alive and dooing well We have a good time generaly here It has rained for the last few days past and the mud is very deep There was three men sencentance the other day one of them struck at the colonel he will bee apt to be shot or somthing eles dun with him jim I wish you was in this compneys we would have so much so we would [?] the little bird flotes up in the[?][?] jim I wish that your regiment was
