DECEMBER. 31. Saturday The year goes out cold and blustering - And leaves me a Prisoner in Sumter. The report has been revived, that Sherman was going to make a special exchange for his men - As yet we have no assurance of a speedey release from this Prison We can hear, nor see nothing Prisoner shot dead while attempting to steel a board over the dead-line The year 1864 has closed with the war still going on, though much has been done during the year to bring it to a close It is generaly supposed that the ensuing year will end the civil war in America
