side with the railway out on an embankment nearly the whole length of the town. the Rr. runs in the middle of a street at one place for some distance. Chicago has about 200,000 inhabitants a good many Germans, plenty of lager bier here. In the evening the convention being at an end the Republican orators had their say from the state house, there seemed to be double as many people as last night & the speaking I heard was a trifle better though very bloody. The first speaker was a gentleman raised down south & his speech was good & to the point but then a man rose up & in his speech put questions
