Camp 4th Iowa Cav Hebron's near Vicksburg Sunday, Jan. 17th 1864 Jennie, My Sister. I wrote to Sallie a few days since and told her to warn you of a coming messenger Now I wish that I could personate that messenger and not be obliged to that unsatsfactory substitute of letter writing. I have been away from home too long to get "homesick" now, but I cannot help it, I think of home and friends very often and often imagine the great pleasure I would enjoy were I to meet once again my friends those who have smoothed and lighted a dark path for me, as you have Jennie those who have treated me kindly and encouragingly in the battle of life, as
