The boys are interesting themselves lately in treasuring relics from the tree under which Grant received the surrender of Vicksburg. Although the tree was well known it had been suffered to stand untouched until some two weeks ago when some vandal cut it down and immediately there was a great rush for pieces as mementoes, and now the tree, twigs and trunk and even the roots are gone. It was a large noble specimen of an oak closely resembling the red-oak of Iowa, but is called here water - or green - oak. Some pieces have been sent to the
