FOSTER Route 2, Box 69 Hamburg, Iowa Camp in rear of Vicksburg July 5th 1863 Dear Friend Another 4th of July has passed and I am still soldering. what a glorious old 4th it was yesterday morning at eight o'clock Vicksburg was surrendered to our forces. I wish you had known it yesterday I know you would have enjoyed your self. there is great rejoiceing among the soldiers, yet there is some that dont feel much like rejoiceing the last two weeks has been a very bad and lonely time for me one after another of my dear friends leaves me first my dear brother was killed, and since then Hud has died with fever Hud died the 2nd of this month he was sick about fifteen days we burried him
