Crossed the Alabama line in the evening; are now in Alabama. Land rather good along the river bottoms but a little distance away it looks poor. Camp at 8 at night. within 1 1/2 miles of Gatesville 23d,, Scott Byers Hood & Aptin promoted to Captains, 2nd Lts promoted to 1st. Lts, 24" Got orders to back to Rome with the Corps supply train. 26" Got off at 6 A M. for Rome, our reg't having 180 wagons under guard, Made a steady march of 18 miles then mounted the wagons and rode the remainder of
