8 miles to-day positions often Support our battery which goes in Our skirmishes, go in Cavalry fight on our right E H go on picket Remain awake all night Very cold Carry off wounded 60. Jan 1st 1863. Move to front at daylight. Change front, severe fight a few hundred yds in front. Rosecrantz comes puts us in position. 8 AM are lying down with our battery in front. Lay in same position all day the enemy trying several times to dislodge us They make a desperate attempt to turn our right but are repulsed Our skirmishers keep up a fire steadily several of them killed or wounded.
