Garlic Syrup for a Cough Take three roots of garlic thinly sliced and 4 onz or a small teacupful of honey 4 oz of vinegar put into a half pint basin of Boiling water where they must remain for an hour before the fire till it smells strongly of the garlic then strain it off take a teaspoonful of the syrup with an equal quantity of Rum and a teaspoonful of cold water every morning fasting and at last thing at night. Syrup of Malt Let a peck of the best malt be ground & put into a tub, pour six quarts of boiling water over it, stir it well, then cover it down close & let it stand 2 [s?] hours, after which strain it off through a fine hair sieve, then put it into a preserving pan over a gentle fire, stirring & skimming it all the time. let it boil till it becomes a syrup that ropes & is as thick as treacle, after which put it into a small jar & when cold cover it close down. A teaspoonful to be taken in a strong fasting & at night going to bed - great care must be taken in the making of it one pound of course brown sugar may be boiled in the above It will take from three to four hours boiling
