Captain South Winchester 38 Onions. Sow in October + transplant in the spring Salsafy - To sow in March - ready to eat in Sept - but to be left in the ground and pulled as required. Gourd or Pumpkin Soup - Miss Marriott Peel and cut into thin slices about 3 lb of Pumpkin or Gourd (removing all the seeds) into 2 quarts of cold water, 2 large onions, also peeled and sliced with a small stick of celery. cut into very small pieces. boil these together slowly for 2 hours + 1/2, + then after adding an ounce of drippings, 2 large tablespoonfuls of flour + pepper + salt to your taste boil all for half an hour longer stirring it frequently while boiling. The pumpkin saved for seed are better for this then those that are less ripe and waty. N.B. I think the dripping butter omitted + the soup improved by being made with the water in which a leg of mutton has been boiled.
