-64- of hot oatmeal; or pea soup at dinner time. And dear Aunt Inger usually kept me supplied with a dish of lovely 'gumme'. Every First-day we were invited to take dinner with them: so one of the girls brot my dinner over to me at Volland on a large covered plate. - As a rule the country folk do not have cook stoves like we do; but, they use large fireplaces which they call 'scorstens.' In the fireplace under little three leged iron stools a wood fire is kindled; over which the kettles are placed. Here also, is where the flat bread and lepsa is baked; on a large, round sheet of iron. A thin wooden stick is used to raise the large, thin sheet of unleavened bread on one side; and keep it moving round and round to prevent it from burning while it is being dry fried. This sort of bread baking continues a week or ten days: during which time enuf bread is baked to supply a good sized family for nearly six months. The sheets which are about two and a half feet in diameter; and as thin as brown paper: are stored in a room in piles from five to six feet high. During my after dinner rests Georgetta
