"If it is possible to get my death sentence changed to life, or years, yes, I believe I gladly could live the right life, and in some way make up for the things I have done. "You see I was told about my mother's death just before the trial, and somehow, I cold not fight any more. I felt it was my fault, I just seemed to hear them talking now and then...No, at no time did we ever think of killing anyone. My brother always told us not to shoot at anyone, and we did not know they were the law. I did not really believe at the time I had shot (a fatal shot he explained), and I was too afraid to know what really did happen. "Thank you so very much for the books and Bible and letters. They have helped me so much. God bless you and yours. I will try to be worthy of your kindness." John M. Mercer. "P.S. Pray for me often. In a letter to my daughter, Ina, on the 23rd of the same month John wrote: "You have given me the power that thru these few days that are left to me, I will live in peace with myself and God. Yes God does love each one of us, a bigger and greater love than I have ever known. I am strong thru His help, I will live forever, maybe not in this world but in a greater world. God is good to me, He has given me friends in my hours of need. And although I am in here, I am free.
