Fort [Cody?] Dec 16 Dear Sister We received your letter a few days ago Was glad to hear from you We have got so far out of the World that we can hardly send or receive anything to our friends any more But we will try and write [illegible] We are all well and getting a long the best we can under the circumstances We are living in a very New place only a little over a year old and 40 miles to the Border of the Settlement there is about one hundred familys In town It is a very hard place to live [illegible] Is so high and hard to get We send down to fort Desmoines for all We get except venison We have plenty of it We Baught a Deer the other day might Swap you for some Apples as all We have In that line Is some Crabapples but We can make pretty good pies out of them as this Is all the paper We have this side
