Pine Plains Dutchess Co Sept 19th 1859 John H. Knapp Esq D. Sir I rec your letter of Sept 8 inclosing one from J. G. Macky. I anticipated from not hearing from my brother Henry that when I did it would be bad. I have no hope that were he here it would be better for him. He would [now/never?] dislike to see his former friends he has that pride that he could not & would not even consent to come back as he is. The only chance as I view it of his ever reforming is where he is now. As to his little girl I have writ to him & to Mr. Macky that I would take her and bring her up well & would be glad to do it. It would be much better for her I have no doubt to be where her relatives who naturally would be interested in her
