Pine Plains Dutchess Co N.Y. Dec. 25 1859 John H. Knapp Esq Dear Sir Yours of 18th inst rec'd. I write to my brother Henry & also to Mr. Mackey as I think I informed you respecting [illegible] daughter and my brother I got no letter from him but on the 1st. Dec. recv'd one from Mr. Mackey informing me that my brother had not consented to it and who suggests the difficulty of getting a competent person to take charge of her in the journey. In his first letter he spoke of persons there who would be willing to take her & adopt her - in this he says in case my brother dies he shall send to the home of refuge in San Francisco, in case none of her relations claim her - and also [threaten?] his being indebted to him for board sum $200 I do not exactly understand what he means as matters therefore stand I see no way that I can carry into effect my project of taking her I should think from his letter
