Fort Madison Iowa Feby 24th 1860 Wm Eno Esq. Pine Plains N.Y. Dear Sir I am again in receipt of intelligence from Campo Seco California saying that Judge Eno has not in any degree reformed or is he likely too that "he is perfectly destitute, is not able to earn any money & is just depending on the charity of his neighbours - all his once manliness of character, independence of spirit & dignity gone". His property what little he has left is mortgaged. I don't know what we could or ought to do for him under present circumstance but I feel very much concern for the welfare of little Carrie & write now more particularly on her account. Times are very hard throughout the whole Western country and money almost out of the question. I have property but not money but I will raise some at any sacrifice & join you in sending for little Carrie & pay one half of all he expense of so doing including amt due for arrearages on her board & to the people that now have her as well as for outfit, passage to New York and pay to the person (lady of course) taking care of her on the trip - let the expense be
