befor I am really aware of it. Since I last wrote to you we have passed through the Fire and the Water as the term is, the House next to ours caught fire and burnt through into ours. We wer damaged more by water than by fire. the Fireman of San Francisco are noted for their liberality of water on such occasions. our house is first [ceiled?] with clothe and then [paperd?], in the earley days plastering was unown or at least people wer in to much of a hurry for it to dry. it was nothing uncommon to see the timbers of a house erected in the morning and the next day or two to see families living in them. in the states Building is thought of months before it is comenced but not so in progressive [call?] you can imagine the condition of my house when i tell you the next morning it started raining wich did not improve our allready saturated house. the roof being tin
