worse than ever. his friends here -- & he had many, have done everything they could for him, got persons to stay with him, for days at a time, to keep a strict watch over him, requested all the liquor dealers in the place not to let him have any thing to drink, but it was all to no purpose in the one case - as soon as the partys back was turned he would be at it again, in the other case he would [illegible] rush into a bar, & get hold of a decanter before any one could prevent him, & drink it every drop -- Sometimes he would leave town & be away for several weeks. I shall not hurt your feelings in detailing the [illegible] he has come through on such a [illegible] suffice it to say they were shocking - perfectly lamentable. Such has been his life for the last 12 mos - & he has got so low - scarcely any one thinks of doing any thing more for him from consultations with my [illegible] has every one [illegible] with in thinking, his only [illegible] would be in returning to his relatives & to accomplish that object, some one of them must come out & take him home. This [illegible] of his friends in the co. who would gladly defray his expences home - if he would only consent to go, but there is [illegible] difficulty he will not -- If this is not done he will [eventually?] fill a drunkards grave, or I sometimes fear a worse fate -- if worse could [illegible] will befall him
