July 30th Removed 9 miles south on Tigerts River and encamped on Crouches farm and commenced fortifying and picketing and remained there working hard during the month of August and September the 1st 1861. I commenced keeping a regular daily diary as follows: Camp Elkwater Randolph County Virginia Sep 1st 1861. This day I commenced keeping a Diary. weather clear & warm. Nothing important in camp during the day. Late in evening our company was ordered on a scouting expedition up the valley. Started upon
