Started before supper. went 9 miles in 2 [1/2?] hours over the worst of roads and went in camp among the bushes. Sep 4th Commenced raining at 2 Oclock last night. Wet through before we got up. rained steady all day. Found we ware close to enemys pickets, but did not molest them and they the same towards us. Sep 5th Rained all last night Kept close all day. Boys out scouting for something to eat found plenty of all kinds [illeg] edibles of all kinds as the owners of the gardens and farms were gone and as they ware Secesh we ware allowed to appropriate freely. One house in neighborhood with 7 women and no men Respec
