considerable excitement among the boys in regard to who shall be our next captain. Part of our Regiment went out today in command of Col. Owen to feel of the Secesh, met their advance guards in considerable numbers and drove them back. Killed 12 of them. One of our men wounded in the leg. Wrote a letter to Sally. Boys verry urgent for me to become their Captain but I refused as it would not show proper courtesy to our Lieutenants. Sep 10. Weather warm & clear.
