be loitering behind. They had cut the throats of their pack mules to keep them from falling into our hands. Their dead and wounded had mostly been carried off but signs ware that 300 400 had been killed or wounded. Got 2 letters from Sally 1 of them dated Aug 1st which she had Expressed to me hoping it would make better time but was mistaken, the other dated Sept 7th. Said she was sick and Nancy had the croup which is bad news to me. She was otherwise good. Weather Clear. Sept 17 Our Company ordered on scout on Elk fork. Wrote a letter to Sally before [?asting]. Then went on picket [and?] [tired?] [illeg] as there was [illeg]
