I History of the Cary Club of Marion, Iowa From 1878 to 1939 The Carly Club of Marion, Iowa was organized Jan. 1878. Was disbanded at some time for a while and reorganized in 1889. On Jan. 16th 1878 six ladies met at the home of one of their number to form a club, wrote out a Constitution and By-Laws and signed as charter members. They were Mrs. A.B. Billington, Mrs. Geo. Wilson, Mrs Anna Stone White, Mrs. S. W. Rathbone, Mrs. L. M. Latham, and Mrs. Webster. Each of these to bring one new member to next meeting. Membership to be limited to twelve. The society was to be known as the Cary club and as it was named in honor of Alice and Phoebe Cary they addopted their motto -- "Thank God for the work he lets me do. I'm glad to live in the world with you" Object of the club - the intellectual improvement of its members; meetings to be held on alternate Mondays at 2-30 P.M., colors gold and white.
