This paper prepared by Mrs Ina Fernon for luncheon meeting at Mrs. L. M. Phelps June, 1939. 
Secretary books of the Cary Club, prior to 1899 seem to be lost or there is a possibility that before that time the minutes may have been kept on slips of paper and destroyed, after being read and approved, so the only history we have for the period from 1878 to 1899, is that taken from newspaper clippings and things remembered and told by older members. Mrs. Alexander, a member of the club from 1880 to 1936, fifty six (56) years, several times at club programs told of her memories of those early days, also Mrs Wilson whose mother, Mrs Hindman, was a member of the club from almost its beginning, has been able to tell much. 
The papers and work given at the clubs early programs represented a large amount of effort, study and research as members then did not have a library to consult and obtain material for thier preparation.
