1913 The February meeting of the W. C. T. U. was held as usual in the congregational church parlor, twenty-five being present. The President being unable to attend Miss Ella Marsh acted in her place. "Sound the Battle Cry" was sung as the opening hymn. A season of prayer followed led by Rev. Wilson of the Christian church. The first an second verses of the hymn "just as I am without one plea" were sung. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Miss Marsh mentioned the fact that this is membership week and that Feb. 17 was the birthday of frances Willar who did so much for the W. C. T. U. and who died in 1898. Twenty or more essays have been written by pupils in the schools and are now being carefully judged. Now is a good time to visit the schools to hear their Temperance lessons. Waterloo has won in its fight against the saloon and stays dry. Ottumna has also won the victory against the "Wets" in spite of the statement to the contrary in the last Champion. We lose one of our members Mrs. Harvey Bliss, who moves to Kensett Iowa this week she keeps her membership with me yet, however. There were 763 votes cast on January 31st 75 against and 288 for woman suffrage. Mrs. Mary Mireham had charge of the program, Moral Education in the Home at School and in Society. Mrs. Buchanan spoke of moral training in the Home. She told us that when a child was old enough to learn obedience it was time to begin moral teaching. The child shold have plenty of sleep nurishing food, cleanliness, and plenty of fresh air both night and day.
