in this village I have frequent conversations with him on legal subjects I have succeeded in getting in his good graces considerably; one of the ride Judges is a Mr Vorce formerly from Dutchess County with him I am on very good terms - Twice have been with Mr. Harris through every town in the County, he went out to purchase cattle & by going with him I have got acquainted with some persons in each town, I went over to Ovid about four weeks ago & staid on Sunday with Mrs Denton they have a large family & appeared glad to see me, & I was much pleased with them. I dc'd not to go to Mr Kinneys he was unwell at the time. Mr Harris Stevens & their Clerk & myself now board with John Millies what we shall have to pay we do not know at present but it will be something less that at a tavern. & we are all better pleased with our living. Harris & Stevens are doing much better business than they expected to do, they have sold four times the quantity of goods they did at the Plains & at much better profit, they have built a barn, 2 sheds to hold about sixty head of cattle which they intend to buy & stall feed. Harris has now gone to Geneseo to purchase his stock - Stevens is in real robust health & being engaged in active business appears a very different person from what he did at the Plains. Betts & his partner have failed in business owing to imprudent management & bad speculations, their affairs are in the worst situation imaginable they have a large sum of money due them & also owe a great deal, their being obliged to stop business at present
